LOOKBOOK: “MODERN HUNTERS” BY IAMISIGO

Nigerian brand IamISIGO released the lookbook of “Modern Hunters”, its SS2016 collection designed by Bubu Ogisi, with footwear by Tunde Owolabi.

The brand reflects on heritage and the visual appeal of vibrant colors, creating “boy-meet-girl” garments that display a consciousness of the changing lifestyles of West Africans.

Ogisi states on Instagram that the collection

is spread across the idea of hunting being a “sport” as most of the Ghanaian warriors were usually hunters like the great Ghanaian female hunting warrior Queen “Yaa Asantewaa” – the Queen who led men to fight the British in 1900 – a woman of pride who proved that Africans. including African woman were – and are still not – weaklings.

“Modern Hunters” was first showcased in July at the Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2015.

Of note is the use of aso oke textiles that underscores the desire to incorporate elements of African dress culture in her minimalist-edgy design. For her SS2015 “Taboo” collection, Ogisi was inspired by Wodaabe culture.

For Ogisi, “the black lace ponchos take after the dark harmattan night of the nomadic lands”, while “the strapless pieces describe the fluidity of the Wodaabe women and their sexuality”.
